From SDI hardware to ST 2110 software<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At Yle’s Vaasa office on Finland’s west coast, LiveOS is helping move production from traditional hardware-centric workflows to a flexible, software-based environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two studios in Vaasa’s brand-new building serve Svenska Yle, Yle’s Swedish-language unit. The larger, 187-square-metre studio is used mainly for the children’s programme BUU-klubben, and the smaller, 56-square-metre multipurpose space for regional interviews, live or recorded segments for national broadcasts and breaking news inserts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both studios run simultaneously on the same LiveOS platform. Delivered together with systems integrator Mediatrade, the project marks Yle Vaasa’s move from a largely SDI-based environment to the SMPTE ST 2110 standard.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two studios, one shared production platform<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The larger studio is used for children’s programmes and other stage productions. Its workflow is strongly scene-based, with multiple cameras and sources recorded simultaneously. A typical production day includes around six hours of 1080p25 multicamera recording, capturing the programme output and selected ISO feeds and sending them to Yle’s environment for post-production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The studio also supports augmented reality (AR) production with three Unreal Engine outputs. For monitoring, the LiveOS interface can produce a mirrored programme feed, so presenters and puppeteers can see how their movements relate to the content on screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The smaller studio is designed for interviews, regional segments and breaking news. Guests can be interviewed live or recorded in 1080p50, and the material is fed into Yle’s national news output. The compact control room lets a small crew run productions efficiently, and the studio’s street-level location suits quick interviews with visiting guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both studios can operate at the same time on the same shared LiveOS system. A third, lightweight LiveOS MCR configuration handles routing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move to ST 2110 is a major change for Yle in Vaasa, which previously relied mainly on SDI. The new IP-based environment allows signals and production resources to be allocated more flexibly, supporting flexible workflows and future remote production.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avid integration was another key requirement of the project. LiveOS supports two recording workflows. Growing files recordings can be written directly to Avid, so editors can start work while recording is still in progress. Alternatively, finished recordings can be stored in LiveOS and transferred to Avid via LiveOS Media Management according to predefined rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than a LiveOS deployment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The project has involved much more than installing LiveOS. Together with Mediatrade, Neton.Live has integrated ST 2110, SDI gateways, cameras, audio, graphics, routing, Avid, NDI and remote production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This broader systems expertise has been essential in connecting the new IP-based resources with existing broadcast equipment and professional production tools. The move to ST 2110 has also been a learning process for Yle Vaasa, as the team adapts to a new way of connecting and managing media resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operators have been able to adapt their workflows to the new environment while gaining more flexibility to develop them further. Rather than missing the previous system, they are already discussing which additional features could be introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, one control room can produce a Swedish-language children’s programme with multicamera Avid recording and AR graphics, while the other handles a regional interview or a segment for the national news. The same platform also supports remote productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Yle in Vaasa, LiveOS and ST 2110 are not just new infrastructure but a flexible foundation for future production.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key benefits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Yle Vaasa project gives the public broadcaster more flexibility, efficiency and reliability. Both studios can operate simultaneously, and cameras, PTZ cameras, graphics and recording resources can be reallocated as production needs change. The move to SMPTE ST 2110 creates a future-ready IP foundation<\/strong>, and thanks to the Avid integration, editors can start working with growing files recordings while recording is still under way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automation, centralised routing and PTZ control help small production teams work efficiently, and LiveOS brings different workflows, from BUU-klubben and AR productions to regional news and interviews, onto the same platform. A REMI configuration adds remote production capability using the same control rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All in all, Yle gains a flexible, software-based production environment while keeping professional tools and workflows for its production staff.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t
