Mediatrade built a video production studio for Iltalehti in December 2019
Iltalehti’s IL-TV platform is one of the most watched video platforms in Finland.
Iltalehti wanted to invest more in content and add fast, news-style live productions to its offering. It also wanted to increase other studio productions, one of the best known being “Sensuroimaton Päivärinta”, which had previously been produced as an outsourced service. Iltalehti wanted to move this production to its new studio too. The key criterion for the studio was ease of use, which also means that live news production can be delivered at short notice. The aim was not to tie up too many resources in production, as the operators also had other duties.
The newsroom was chosen as the studio location, putting us right at the heart of news production. As the space was mainly open-plan office, it was clear that the studio had to fit in with the newsroom’s other activities. Large, heavy traditional broadcast equipment was out of the question; the aim was the most compact solution possible. The vision mixer chosen was Broadcastpix’s Mica, a compact all-in-one solution that combines vision mixing, a graphics generator and video clip playback.
For cameras, the options considered were robotic (PTZ) cameras and traditional broadcast cameras, but in the end we chose a solution that combines compactness and quality. The cameras are Blackmagic Design Studio Cameras. They combine studio camera connectivity with a sensor size more typical of system cameras (4/3 inch), enabling a distinctive look and quality that would not have been possible with more traditional solutions.
The studio needed plenty of light, which is provided by Litepanels. Litepanels 1×1 panels were chosen, and the studio also uses effect lights.
The studio had its baptism of fire with, of course, a seven-hour live broadcast of the Independence Day celebrations. The broadcast combined studio segments with live coverage of the atmosphere from the Presidential Palace. Live video interviews in the field are transmitted reliably to the studio using LiveU’s LTE-based solution, where they can easily be combined with the rest of the production.

Media house
IP-based production technology brings video, audio and communication systems together into a flexible whole. The solution lays the foundation for efficient use of production resources.

Hybrid events
The production system was rebuilt on NDI video transport and a Dante audio network. All spaces are controlled centrally.
