Radio studio renewal

Mediatrade renewed a modern audiovisual production space for teaching at the University of Helsinki.

The University of Helsinki’s Svenska social- och kommunalhögskolan renewed its teaching radio studio over the winter and spring. The starting point was to update the existing radio studio to match modern workflows and to add visual radio functionality.

Mats Söderman, Digital Development Coordinator at Svenska social- och kommunalhögskolan, is pleased with the new studio’s functionality.

The collaboration worked well throughout the project. New opportunities and options came up along the way, and Mediatrade’s answer was always yes. This way, our project kept improving all the time.

Upgrade to digital technology

The studio’s technology was upgraded to digital, and at the same time the university’s Jutel Radioman automation was updated. The automation control functions were integrated into a touchscreen control interface, which will also allow the studio to be used solo in future, without a sound engineer.

The innovative control interface controls all the equipment needed for studio work, and the camera shots cut automatically to whoever is speaking in the studio.

Audio control room upgrade

The renewal also upgraded the studio’s audio control room, and the desk now also has a traditional fader panel. This makes it possible to teach the basics of sound engineering while moving entirely to the digital world.

“Working with Mediatrade has been pleasant and very flexible, and we feel we got exactly the studio we set out to find. We already have ideas for further development, now that we have seen all the new ways of producing radio that this makes possible,” says Mats Söderman.
